Animal Shelters Plea for Help Amidst Pandemic

Local animal shelters are temporarily closed to the public and their operations are limited. Still, their main priority is the welfare of our four-legged friends. Here's how you can extend help to those in need.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a huge impact on our community, and while we always advise people to take care of themselves (including their families and loved ones), no one should be left out—not even our pets and four-legged companions.

CityDog Magazine reached out to local animal shelters in Portland on how they've been dealing with the current situation. Whether there's a crisis or none, a simple help is greatly appreciated.

The Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team came up with updated protocols regarding their operations. They're still open to the public, but know that this is going to be limited.

The PAW team will accommodate scheduled vet and tech appointments with safety measures. However, the qualification interviews are temporarily suspended. For those who have a scheduled interview on March 17 or March 24, kindly wait for a rescheduled date. They're looking into March 31 as their tentative restart date, and we'll keep you posted with this.

For transparency, they came up with an emergency sick fund for their staff in need of medical help. The PAW Team Board has also convened a quarantine procedure for staff who had a close contact with a COVID-19 case.

You can show your support to the PAW team through donations by checking this link. Any amount can have an impact on the lives of homeless people, together with their pets in dire need of accessible veterinary care.

You can also become part of the team as a volunteer. For more information, you can reach them through:

Office Hours:
Tuesdays to Thursdays, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

"COVID-19 will likely have a lasting impact on our community. Your support is more important than ever before.  Please consider making a donation today to help us protect the pets and people we serve the impacts of COVID-19." - The Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team

We also got an update from the Oregon Human Society (OHS). They've also adjusted their event calendar and appointments as a precautionary measure for COVID-19. All of their tours, group volunteers, and other school-related events are canceled. The Free Pets for Seniors program has been postponed and as of March 26, 2020, Doggie Dash has been postponed (new date TBA).

They've been extra careful in limiting the number of individuals to accommodate at a time. The team will only allow people who are "adopting a pet, surrendering an animal, dropping off a pet for spay/neuter surgery, or meeting with a trainer to come to the shelter."

UPDATE: As of March 19, Multnomah County Animal Services has transferred six cats and three dogs to OHS. Another forty cats and dogs came from Easter Oregon as well later that day.

For this, OHS added more foster homes specifically for pets with special behavior and medical needs. As of now, 160 pets are receiving foster care.

As of March 20, you can inquire about pet adoptions through their hotline and by appointment.

Phone: 503-285-7722

“Our hope is that these new measures will encourage people to adopt a pet while providing assurance that OHS is doing what we can to protect the health of our community,” says Sharon Harmon, OHS President and CEO.

Feel free to take a look at the pets available for adoption through this link. A lot of lovely adoptable animals are waiting for their furrever homes!

While the global crisis has made us stay indoors, you can make your day fun and enjoyable by fostering or adopting a new pet. Based on our report, there's no strong evidence that your pet can get infected from COVID-19. Thus, being infected from animals is impossible as well. If you can't foster a pet or be a pet parent for now, you can still help in your community through donations.

Editor's Note: Stay tuned for the latest updates as we hear from more local animal welfare organizations.
