All Aboard With Bowzer

Have you ever imagined how nice it would be to experience traveling like people did “back in the day” via the railroad? Well, now you can make a dream come true with Amtrak’s new policy for traveling with your dog or cat.
Written by Kathleen A. Hunter, MS
Earlier this year, Amtrak officially made changes to its traveling with pets policy. Amtrak President and CEO, Joe Boardman, says, “We listened to our passengers and delivered on this program, which will also help increase ridership and revenue.” However, before you pack a suitcase with all your dog’s travel gear, there are some important details.

First and foremost, there is a weight maximum of 20 pounds including the carrier. The size of the carrier must not exceed 19 inches long by 14 inches wide by 10.5 inches high. There is a $25 fee each way for your pet in addition to the regular fare for you and there is a one pet per passenger limit.

When deciding where to travel, keep in mind that the time on the train with your pet cannot exceed seven hours. And it is especially important to keep in mind that your pet must remain in his carrier for the duration of the trip, which will be kept on the floor in front of the seat next to you. Also, you must never leave your pet unattended. Travel is also limited to within the United States. Reservations can be made only with an agent or at a staffed station and are on a first-come, first-served basis so plan ahead and early. To make your reservation, call 1-800-USA-RAIL. For additional information you may also visit their website amtrak.com.

We get it that these rules eliminate most dogs from riding the rails, including mine -- however, we hope that after this initial test, Amtrak will allow all dogs, not just the tiny ones!
